While the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology is the ultimate destination of every artifact excavated and where their stories are shared with the public, the Bodrum Research Center is where INA researchers and archaeologists carry out the major work of their projects. Often eclipsing the resources and time expended in excavation this work includes painstakingly conserving and preparing all artifacts and discoveries for study and display.
Sitting atop the hills overlooking Bodrum Harbor, the Research Center is a four-building campus with offices, a series of dormitory rooms and suites for visiting students, scholars and other friends of INA. It houses the Tooze Library and the Nixon Griffis Conservation Laboratory, including the Hethea Nye Wood Conservation Facility. Along with INA's fleet, the valuable resources of the Centre exist to support the work of scholars who travel to Bodrum to conduct archaeological surveys leading to the discovery of shipwrecks and to study the significance of their findings.
The Bodrum Research Center is a testament to the generosity of INA directors and its many friends and sponsors. Designed by award-winning architect, Turgut Cansever, the neo-Ottoman building is constructed from locally quarried stone that nearly glows in the midday Turkish sun. It was officially opened on July 7, 1995 at a ceremony attended by representatives of the Turkish government, the American Embassy, and INA's Board of Directors.
The Institute of Nautical Archaeology recognizes those who were critical to the establishment of the Research Centre, its outlying buildings and its fleet.
