When I was writing my popular book, The Sea of Galilee Boat, I was concerned to make the chapter on hull construction as compelling as possible to the average reader. So in 1994 I interviewed Dick Steffy and asked him many of the same questions that I remembered discussing with him during the excavation of the boat. I then transcribed his responses and used them verbatim in the chapter on hull construction (entitled "Yep, It's an Old Boat"), which is as much about Dick as it is about the boat.
I thought the tapes had been lost, but recently, while cleaning out old files, I came across them again. Nautical Archaeology Program graduate student Ryan Lee kindly transcribed them from the tapes to digital format. I hope you will enjoy listening to Dick discuss these issues. -- Shelley Wachsmann
